Underground Wonders Abound in State

Missouri is unofficially known as the Cave State. The name refers to the more than 5,000 caves that dot the state's landscape. The state of Missouri is largely underlain with limestone. The porous nature of this allows rainwater to seep in and dissolve the minerals. Over untold years this dissolving action has eroded even the large showplace caves we see today. The same water that dissolves minerals to form the caves may also redeposit minerals within the caverns. In this way cave formations are created. Some of the most commonly seen are stalactites, deposits that begin on the roof of a cave and build toward the floor, and stalagmites that begin on a cave floor and build upward.

Exploration of "wild" or undeveloped caves should only be attempted by experienced cave explorers and always with a partner. However, anyone can enjoy a guided tour through showplace caves in complete safety. Some cave trails may include steep grades or stairs so it is wise to check before beginning the tour.

The following caves, located in or near Webster County, are open to the public.
