Address Resolution Protocol (ARP)

The protocol that translates Internet Protocol (IP) addresses (for example, 128.10.3.42) into physical network addresses. One of the many members of the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) protocol suite, ARP is a key player in the process that allows a packet of data addressed to a particular Internet (see Internet - Overview) host to find its destination.
