Morse, Samuel Finley Breese

American inventor and noted portraitist born in Charlestown, Mass, who lived from 1791 to 1872. After spending 12 years perfecting his own version of Ampere, Andre Marie's idea for an electric Telegraph, Morse demonstrated (1844) the practicability of his device to Congress and subsequently won world fame. Because many phases of the invention had been anticipated by others, his originality as the inventor of telegraphy has been questioned. Morse later experimented with submarine cable telegraphy.
