Paper Insulated Lead Covered (PILC) Cable

A cable consisting of a Copper sector-shaped Conductor with multiple layers of Oil-impregnated paper Insulation wrapped helically around the conductor. The single conductors are cabled (twisted), a Lead covering is extruded over the core and then a protective jacket is extruded over the lead sheath. As early as sixty years ago this type of cable was used in underground and vault-type applications.

In most situations PILC cables are being replaced by Rubber solid Dielectric cables. Rubber-type cables are typically up to 30 percent lighter per foot and offer easier installation. The termination and splicing can be performed with premolded dead front/load break elbows as well as Heat or cold shrink devices.
